Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in Hamburg in 1809 and died in Leipzig at the age of 38. He was very early musically gifted. Mendelssohn performed in public at the age of 9 and composed already from the age of 11. As a pupil of Friedrich Zelter, who was a friend of Goethe, Mendelssohn composed at the age of 17 his first masterpiece: the Overture to the Midsummer Night's Dream. This is included in the extensive CD box as well as a large number of other known or less known pieces by him. The String Quartet in F Minor Op. 80 - written in memory of his beloved sister Fanny - which was recorded in this collection by the Aurora String Quartet is undoubtedly one of his most beautiful works. The Gächinger Kantorei with Helmuth Rilling, the Bach Collegium Stuttgart, the Bartholdy Piano Quartet, the Heidelberger Sinfoniker with Thomas Fey, Ana-Marija Markovina and other renowned interpreters and orchestras can also be heard.

This is an exciting glimpse into the world of black American funk, jazz and soul from the early 70s. The music has a political agenda, even when it isn’t overtly preaching a message. Recorded after the 60s dream had ended, during the era of Watergate, the oil crisis and a financial crash, there is a schizophrenic edge to the music here. There are tracks about trying to get things right, but also about partying as a way to forget.

One of the better compilations of Three Dog Night material, Celebrate covers all the important bases in the popular singles band's career. There's a brief hint of pre-3DN material from co-lead singers Danny Hutton and Cory Wells (no Chuck Negron), along with one stellar, tragically unreleased track from the band's brief Redwood incarnation, the Brian Wilson-penned "Time to Get Alone." The remainder of this two-CD collection recaps the group's many Top 40 hits along with choice album tracks. The songs are judiciously chosen, and the liner notes provide insights into the band's creative process and internal skirmishes, but there's nothing in the way of remastered tracks or uncovered obscurities. Nevertheless, this is a better option for Three Dog Night fans than any of the numerous single-disc greatest hits collections available, simply because there are no glaring oversights in the song choices. The expanded selection also makes the set a great one to convert anyone not yet warm to Three Dog Night's intricate harmony stylings: just play them the gorgeous non-singles "It's for You," "My Impersonal Life," and "I'd Be So Happy" back to back.

No stranger to collaborations, the Cavalera brothers enlisted Travis Stone (PIG DESTROYER) on lead guitars, and that choice becomes obvious within the first song. The full lineup would consist of more Cavalera alumni, as Igor Amadeus Cavalera (GO AHEAD AND DIE, HEALING MAGIC) once more brought his talents on bass to the fold. Thundering and thrumming the low end with brute force, it is clear that the double Iggor and Igor combination is a rhythm section to be reckoned with.

The name 'Chandos anthems' is most frequently associated with Handel, but he was not the first, nor the last, composer in the extravagant household of James Brydges, the Duke of Chandos from 1719. Working concurrently with Handel at Cannons was the Berlin native, Johann Christoph Pepusch?nearly 20 years Handel's senior?who took over as Director of Music by early 1719 whereupon he adopted a distinctly Venetian approach to sacred music, in the manner of Lotti and Vivaldi.

…The First Sonata dates from 1895, shortly after the First Symphony, and basks securely in the warm A major which the later Sinfonia espansiva was to spend much of its time trying to recapture. Lydia Mordkovitch gives it the full romantic treatment, and it took me a couple of rehearings (with a slight reduction of volume level) to feel at ease with her big, gushing tone, vehement selfassertion and impulsive rubato.

Michael Haydn wrote his Italian "Serenata" to a libretto by Metastasio on the theme of the lover's grief felt by the goddess Diana, who took vows of chastity without thinking that she might be hit by Amor's arrows. This opera in two acts from 1778 celebrated it's premiere during Michael Haydn's lifetime but then was forgotten for more than two centuries; it was first performed again in full in Salzburg in 2018 and now is finally available on cpo.

During the mid to late 1960s the Modern Music Centre in London welcomed hundreds of aspirant hopefuls through it's doors at 86 Turnham Green Terrace in Chiswick. Over seventy acetates at least on the studio's own label are known to exist but the fact that few have ever been released has ensured the studio remains a largely forgotten venture. It's relatively prolific output of discs however has enabled a most entertaining expedition with Faces From The Dark, from singular beat to unhinged psychedelia, amidst a good measure of fuzzed our frazzles. Faces From The Dark is a CD only compilation featuring 28 tracks (of which only 3 have been previously released)

"Big Brother & the Holding Company," is an early recording by Big Brother and the Holding Company, a psychedelic blues rock San Francisco-based band during the late 1960's. The record survives largely because of their great, great chick singer, Janis Joplin, of course, who joined them on a Chicago gig. Although Joplin fans will know that she did not, unfortunately, survive the 1970's, as she passed on October 4, 1970 (aged 27), in Los Angeles, California. But in her brief career, despite her troubled life, she left behind a stunning, gutsy repertory of work that has long since floated free of, and outlived, Big Brother. This record, however, was laid down about six months before she (and they) achieved lasting blazing stardom at the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival.

An album and a singles collection at the same time, Fab Four Suture stitches together four limited-edition EPs Stereolab released in the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006. Over the years, the group has made a reputation for having EPs and singles – and therefore, singles collections – that are just as good, if not better, than their albums, as comps like Switched On and Aluminum Tunes attest. Stereolab has also always been very democratic about making sure fans can get their hands on nearly all of their more obscure releases in some form or another; while Fab Four Suture is a little different than their other collections in that it was designed to form an album upon the completion of the EP series, in terms of its quality, it's on par with the band's most enjoyable comps. By combining the looser, more experimental feel of their EPs with the album format, Fab Four Suture ends up being more organic-feeling than Stereolab's previous album, the lovely but occasionally distant Margerine Eclipse.

Fabulous Disaster is the third studio album by American thrash metal band Exodus, released on January 30, 1989. Exodus toured for five months to promote the release of Fabulous Disaster and embarked on a month-long European tour with Nuclear Assault and Acid Reign. The band wrapped up the album tour, performing at The Fillmore in San Francisco on July 14, 1989, which was recorded for the band's first live album Good Friendly Violent Fun and released two years later.
However, things could have been different back then, because on the night of March 8, 1989 another show was recorded, a show that saw them destroy the stage of The Astoria in London! A night that went down in history and became legendary among Exodus and thrash metal fans worldwide! This recording has remained unheard and kept in the Exodus vaults until now! 35 years later this rager of a show will finally be released for the first time ever!
