Singer Tierinii Jackson and her songwriting partner Ori Naftaly are determined to bring new energies to blues and horn-based R&B with Southern Avenue. Deeply enmeshed in the rich musical traditions of their Memphis, Tennessee, hometown, Southern Avenue looks to have found a simpatico new label home with Chicago's storied Alligator Records for their fourth album, Family. The band includes Jackson's siblings Tikyra (vocals/drums) and Ava (vocals/percussion/violin), and also benefits from the continued presence of founding keyboardist Jeremy Powell. Bass is handled by Blake Rhea and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars); Dickinson, the son of legendary Bluff City producer Jim Dickinson, is a longtime friend of the band who appeared on their 2017 self-titled debut. The connection to Memphis' storied musical history doesn't stop there—Family was recorded at Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios by his son, Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell.

The songs are respectful of their provenance but also brim with new inspiration. Set to funky repeated guitar line, "Rum Boogie" tells the story of their early days playing at the titular cafe: "Down home kicking/ On a Beale Street mission/ Came a brother on the keys/ Man, when he hit it/ So sweet we was with it." The thumping groove of "Late Night Get Down" is backed by Naftaly's slide guitar and "So Much Love" demonstrates the ensemble's ability to swing a hooky and smooth soul single. Naftaly and Tierinii Jackson are intent on not wasting a word in their direct lyrics. In the bluesy strutter, "Upside," Jackson lays out her philosophy, "Don't you hold on to mistakes that you made/ Give no power to the price of the game/ Don't waste your time/ On things that you can't change." Southern Avenue is proof that Memphis can still inspire compelling roots music.
