This trio session is a bit unusual for Fred Hersch because it doesn't feature any of his own works, but his inspired choice of music and interesting arrangements make this trio session one worth acquiring. Joined by bassist Steve La Spina and drummer Jeff Hirschfield, he explores such classic jazz compositions as Wayne Shorter's "Black Nile," which is played with fire, the uptempo Sam Jones blues "Unit Seven," and Miles Davis' "All Blues," which is given a swirling piano introduction in a brisk arrangement. Hersch also caresses Cole Porter's masterful ballad "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye."

This is my second album in which I am pursuing my blues rocking passion and I think I am developing my song writing and singing style further. It definitely has a few more romantic and mellow songs but those that are not, tend to be a bit rougher and this is the direction I wanted to explore here.

In sorting through the Red archive we found two Sphere tapes that we thought were blank. Brilliant Corners is a studio album by American jazz musician Thelonious Monk. It was his third album for Riverside Records, and the first, for this label, to include his own compositions. The complex title track required over a dozen takes in the studio. The album was recorded in three sessions in late 1956 with two different quintets.
