Très contrasté, incroyablement exigeant pour les interprètes et d’une grande intensité, il constitue l’une des pierres angulaires du répertoire. Moins d’une dizaine d’années plus tard, Schönberg compose un autre monument du sextuor à cordes, dont la vigueur n’a probablement rien à envier à celui de Tchaikovski : La Nuit transfigurée, inspirée du poème de Robert Dehmel, pousse l’expression romantique à son paroxysme dans un tableau musical noir et fiévreux.Héritier des grands interprètes russes, le Oistrakh Quartet est chez lui dans ces deux chefs-d'œuvre, qu’il enregistre en compagnie de l’altiste Daniel Austrich et du violoncelliste Alexander Buzlov.

Daniel Pio Dal Barba (1715–1801) is known for his role as maestro di cappella at Verona Cathedral, as well as his successful career as an opera composer and male soprano, also in Verona. His large catalogue of liturgical music is mostly well preserved, and his sacred music can be considered a simplified version of the dominant style (in terms of harmony, counterpoint and timbre) of the first half of the 18th century. His compositions were most often written for a relatively small ensemble (three or four voices, two violins and basso continuo), whereas works by his contemporaries would typically include wind instruments also.

After aging the past 24 years, Nils Henrik Asheim’s work “Salmenes bok” (“The Book of Psalms”) has now been released. The hour-long work was written for the dedication of Oslo Cathedral’s new Ryde & Berg organ in 1998. It features both organs in the cathedral (with Kåre Nordstoga on the choir organ and Asheim playing the main organ) to create a surround sound around the choir singing 21 texts from the biblical Psalms in a rich tonal language equally rich in contrast. The result is a unique listening experience, a magical fusing of voices and organ.
