The Practice of Time Series Analysis

The Practice of Time Series Analysis by Hirotugu Akaike, Genshiro Kitagawa
English | PDF | 1999 | 388 Pages | ISBN : 1461274397 | 34.3 MB

Due to the introduction of the information criterion AIC and development of prac tical use of Bayesian modeling, the method of time analysis is now showing remarkable progress. In attempting the study of a new field the actual phenomenon is rarely so simple as to allow direct applications of existing methods of analysis or models. The real thrill of the statistical analysis lies in the process of developing a new model depending on the purpose and the characteristics of the object of the research. The purpose of this book ist.o introduce the readers to successful applications of the meth ods of time series analysis in a variety of fields, such as engineering, earth science, medical science, biology, and economics. The editors have been aware of the importance of cooperative research in sta tistical science and carried out various cooperative research projects in the area of time series analysis. The Institute of Statistical Mathematics was reorganized as an inter-university research institute in 1985 and the activities of the Institute have been organized to promote the cooperative researches as its central activity. This book is composed of the outcomes of cooperative researches developed within this environ ment and contains the results ranging from the pioneering realizations of statistical control to the latest consequences of time series modeling.

Handbook of Complex Variables

Handbook of Complex Variables by Steven G. Krantz
English | PDF | 1999 | 301 Pages | ISBN : 0817640118 | 17.8 MB

This book is written to be a convenient reference for the working scientist, student, or engineer who needs to know and use basic concepts in complex analysis. It is not a book of mathematical theory. It is instead a book of mathematical practice. All the basic ideas of complex analysis, as well as many typical applica tions, are treated. Since we are not developing theory and proofs, we have not been obliged to conform to a strict logical ordering of topics. Instead, topics have been organized for ease of reference, so that cognate topics appear in one place. Required background for reading the text is minimal: a good ground ing in (real variable) calculus will suffice. However, the reader who gets maximum utility from the book will be that reader who has had a course in complex analysis at some time in his life. This book is a handy com pendium of all basic facts about complex variable theory. But it is not a textbook, and a person would be hard put to endeavor to learn the subject by reading this book.

Homogenization and Structural Topology Optimization: Theory, Practice and Software

Homogenization and Structural Topology Optimization: Theory, Practice and Software

Homogenization and Structural Topology Optimization: Theory, Practice and Software by Behrooz Hassani , Ernest Hinton
English | PDF | 1999 | 279 Pages | ISBN : 1447112296 | 32.6 MB

Structural topology optimization is a fast growing field that is finding numerous applications in automotive, aerospace and mechanical design processes. Homogenization is a mathematical theory with applications in several engineering problems that are governed by partial differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients Homogenization and Structural Topology Optimization brings the two concepts together and successfully bridges the previously overlooked gap between the mathematical theory and the practical implementation of the homogenization method. The book is presented in a unique self-teaching style that includes numerous illustrative examples, figures and detailed explanations of concepts. The text is divided into three parts which maintains the book's reader-friendly appeal.

Partial Differential Equations V: Asymptotic Methods for Partial Differential Equations by M. V. Fedoryuk
English | PDF | 1999 | 248 Pages | ISBN : 3540533710 | 22.4 MB

In this paper we shall discuss the construction of formal short-wave asymp totic solutions of problems of mathematical physics. The topic is very broad. It can somewhat conveniently be divided into three parts: 1. Finding the short-wave asymptotics of a rather narrow class of problems, which admit a solution in an explicit form, via formulas that represent this solution. 2. Finding formal asymptotic solutions of equations that describe wave processes by basing them on some ansatz or other. We explain what 2 means. Giving an ansatz is knowing how to give a formula for the desired asymptotic solution in the form of a series or some expression containing a series, where the analytic nature of the terms of these series is indicated up to functions and coefficients that are undetermined at the first stage of consideration. The second stage is to determine these functions and coefficients using a direct substitution of the ansatz in the equation, the boundary conditions and the initial conditions. Sometimes it is necessary to use different ansiitze in different domains, and in the overlapping parts of these domains the formal asymptotic solutions must be asymptotically equivalent (the method of matched asymptotic expansions). The basis for success in the search for formal asymptotic solutions is a suitable choice of ansiitze. The study of the asymptotics of explicit solutions of special model problems allows us to "surmise" what the correct ansiitze are for the general solution.

Problems and Solutions for Complex Analysis

Problems and Solutions for Complex Analysis by Rami Shakarchi
English | PDF | 1999 | 256 Pages | ISBN : 0387988319 | 27.6 MB

This book contains all the exercises and solutions of Serge Lang's Complex Analy sis. Chapters I through VITI of Lang's book contain the material of an introductory course at the undergraduate level and the reader will find exercises in all of the fol lowing topics: power series, Cauchy's theorem, Laurent series, singularities and meromorphic functions, the calculus of residues, conformal mappings and har monic functions. Chapters IX through XVI, which are suitable for a more advanced course at the graduate level, offer exercises in the following subjects: Schwarz re flection, analytic continuation, Jensen's formula, the Phragmen-LindelOf theorem, entire functions, Weierstrass products and meromorphic functions, the Gamma function and the Zeta function. This solutions manual offers a large number of worked out exercises of varying difficulty. I thank Serge Lang for teaching me complex analysis with so much enthusiasm and passion, and for giving me the opportunity to work on this answer book. Without his patience and help, this project would be far from complete. I thank my brother Karim for always being an infinite source of inspiration and wisdom. Finally, I want to thank Mark McKee for his help on some problems and Jennifer Baltzell for the many years of support, friendship and complicity. Open Problems in Mathematical Systems and Control Theory

Open Problems in Mathematical Systems and Control Theory by Vincent Blondel (PhD), Eduardo D. Sontag (PhD), Mathukumalli Vidyasagar (PhD), Jan C. Willems (PhD)
English | PDF | 1999 | 277 Pages | ISBN : 1447112075 | 23.3 MB

System and Control theory is one of the most exciting areas of contemporary engineering mathematics. From the analysis of Watt's steam engine governor - which enabled the Industrial Revolution - to the design of controllers for consumer items, chemical plants and modern aircraft, the area has always drawn from a broad range of tools. It has provided many challenges and possibilities for interaction between engineering and established areas of 'pure' and 'applied' mathematics. This impressive volume collects a discussion of more than fifty open problems which touch upon a variety of subfields, including: chaotic observers, nonlinear local controlability, discrete event and hybrid systems, neural network learning, matrix inequalities, Lyapunov exponents, and many other issues. Proposed and explained by leading researchers, they are offered with the intention of generating further work, as well as inspiration for many other similar problems which may naturally arise from them. With extensive references, this book will be a useful reference source - as well as an excellent addendum to the textbooks in the area.

Positive Solutions of Differential, Difference and Integral Equations

Positive Solutions of Differential, Difference and Integral Equations by Ravi P. Agarwal , Donal O’Regan , Patricia J. Y. Wong
English | PDF | 1999 | 425 Pages | ISBN : 0792355105 | 23.2 MB

In analysing nonlinear phenomena many mathematical models give rise to problems for which only nonnegative solutions make sense. In the last few years this discipline has grown dramatically. This state-of-the-art volume offers the authors' recent work, reflecting some of the major advances in the field as well as the diversity of the subject.
