Pop Rock, Soft Rock | Warner Records #R2 25059 / 603497830718

During her years with Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie only recorded one album. It was released in 1984, after Mirage had run its course and the band was taking an extended break. Given its release date, it's not surprising that Christine McVie sounds like it could have been recorded during the Mirage sessions – it's a collection of soft rock/pop and ballads that are pleasantly melodic and ingratiating. Only a handful of cuts, such as the wonderfully catchy, lightly bouncy hit single "Got a Hold on Me," work their way into the memory, but nothing on Christine McVie is anything less than agreeable. The record simply suffers from a rather predictable fate – it's a little too sweet and laid-back to be consumed in one sitting, and its best songs would have sounded even better if they were balanced by Lindsey Buckingham's insular, paranoid pop genius and Stevie Nicks' hippie-folk mysticism.

UK two CD set that tells a twin story of Tango. On the one hand, performers of the classic form including Carlos Gardél who died in 1935 but is still "singing better every day"; and on the other, those of the radical Astor Piazzolla, the rebel who returned. But even rebels can become regents and today it is all Tango: passionate, proud, elegant and magnificently seductive. Welcome to it's world. Metro Select. 2011.

Suss'd's overhaul of the Salsoul catalog results in another necessary release. Here, First Choice gets double-disc treatment that provides both the single edits and well-known extended mixes of the biggest hits, including "Doctor Love" (present on the second disc in the form of a Tom Moulton mix), "Let No Man Put Asunder" (the Shep Pettibone mix is included), and "Love Thang" (overhauled by the late, great Tee Scott). It wouldn't be possible to release a better compilation of the group's Salsoul years, though the set has the disadvantage of not being able to cover their earlier years, when they were releasing gorgeous singles like "Armed and Extremely Dangerous," "Smarty Pants," "The Player," and "Guilty."

Their much-anticipated new album offers a fresh, modern take on the blues, channelling the vibes of contemporary giants like The Black Keys and My Baby or a modern JJ Cale take while staying true to the band's deep blues roots. The award winning Danes have already released the pulsating groove of "Long Time Ago," which sees Risager's soulful vocals swoon around the swampy, raw energy that has become synonymous with The Black Tornado's sound.

Hollywood's version of Meredith Willson's first musical, The Music Man, a massive hit onstage, was largely faithful to the show and itself became a massively successful film. The movie adaptation of Willson's second musical, the modestly successful The Unsinkable Molly Brown, was less faithful and became a modestly successful film. Both followed the story of Molly Brown, a real historical figure who capped her rags-to-riches story by surviving the Titanic disaster. The MGM movie jettisoned stage star Tammy Grimes in favor of Debbie Reynolds, but retained male lead Harve Presnell, who made his film debut. Only four songs – "Belly Up to the Bar, Boys," "I Ain't Down Yet," "I'll Never Say No," and "Johnny's Soliloquy" – were retained from the 16-song show score, and they were augmented by "Colorado, My Home," a song that had been cut from the show shortly after it opened, and "He's My Friend," which Willson wrote for the film.

The Funkees hit London in 1973 as the tightest, funkiest and most audacious bands to come out of Africa. Hardened by endless touring and an unrelenting battle with BLO and Monomono to be the best band in Nigeria, they were in prime musical condition, ready to finally lay down their first album. The result was Point Of No Return, a balls-to-the wall Afro funk-psych-rock monster that placed them, without question, on the top of the Afro funk pile. From the audacious opening instrumental title track to the funky finale, ‘I Can’t Be Satisfied’, the musicianship is jaw dropping, with a rhythm section so tight you couldn't slip a cigarette paper between them. ‘Abraka’, ‘Dancing In The Nude’ and ‘Ole’ find Jake Sollo, Harry Mosco and Sonny Akpabio at the height of their powers, playing songs fashioned from the sweat of years playing live and the soca and calypso influences of the West African and Caribbean musicians they played with in London. Point of No Return is rightly regarded as a landmark of psychedelic Afro Funk. It's also one that marks out The Funkees as not just one of the best bands in Nigeria or Africa, but in London and across the world too. - Peter Moore

Although by no means Brahms’s very first composition, the Sonata in C major bears the number ‘Op.1’ and is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant débuts in musical history. No wonder no less than Robert Schumann saw Brahms as the saviour of German music. To accompany what is in every respect a dazzling work, another masterpiece was needed, and what better than Franz Schubert’s famous ‘Wanderer Fantasy’, the most virtuosic composition in his entire output.

26 of the Good Dr.’s A & B-Sides from 1968–1974. Dr. John has proven to be one of music’s foremost generalists, a primary-care cat whose practice extends back some 60 years. The awards (six Grammys and counting) and accolades validated the quality of his output, but it’s the range of what he’s done that truly impresses. These Atco and Atlantic sides were clearly the right-place right-time recordings. They put Dr. John on the map and into the ears and minds of music enthusiasts the world over. —excerpt from liner notes by Gene Sculatti

He later covered the track "Travelin' Light" for his 2001 studio album Reptile. "Travelin' Light" was also recorded by Widespread Panic for their album Space Wrangler in 1988. JJ Cale's version of his own "Travelin' Light" was played to awaken the crews of the Atlantis Space Shuttle and International Space Station preceding their spacewalk early on Friday May 21, 2010.

The first album by the '70s (i.e. Annie Haslam) version of Renaissance is a transitional work, rooted in more standard hard rock sounds (including psychedelia) than what followed. One can spot the difference, which may please some listeners and put others off, in the fairly heavy guitar sound of "Prologue," Rob Hendry's electric instrument playing both lead and rhythm parts prominently at various times behind Annie Haslam's soaring vocals and adjacent to John Tout's piano.
