Nearly all of Loewe's most popular ballads are included in this collection, sung by a voice that is admirably suited to them, and interpreted by an intelligence that dramatizes each song grippingly without the need to inflect every emotive word. Quasthoff's baritone has a rich and sonorous extension into the bass range, a broad palette of vocal colour (so he can personify the child, the father and the sinister wraith in Erlkonig or act out the fraught colloquy of Edward without ever ceasing to sing) and it is a voice that can touch lightly or sing quietly without losing tone. He has excellent diction, firm control (the long and difficult phrase on the word ''horcht'' in Der Nock is managed quite beautifully in a single breath) and a fine sense of the long, sustained melodic line. He is a young (just turned 30) and rather impetuous singer: several of the songs here are on the fast side, with not enough room to relax into a culminatory phrase, and once or twice he forces the upper voice at moments of tension or excitement. But I can't think of many singers of his generation that I would rather hear in this repertory. A distinguished debut, and I eagerly look forward to his Schubert, his Wolf and his Brahms.
The insert booklet, regrettably, includes only the German texts of the ballads. It says virtually nothing about Loewe, devoting most of its space to Thomas Quasthoffs physical disability (unspecified, but he is a Thalidomide victim) and his triumph over it. His singing is so accomplished that it needs no such special pleading.–Michael Oliver
