Milt Jackson - Opus De Jazz (1955) Japanese UHQCD Remastered Reissue 2017

This Savoy CD is a duplicate of the original LP although it lacks the fine liner notes included on the Arista/Savoy 1978 LP. The four selections (which unfortunately total under 34 minutes) are excellent, particularly a fun version of Horace Silver's blues "Opus De Funk" in which vibraphonist Milt Jackson, flutist Frank Wess and pianist Hank Jones have a long tradeoff. The quintet (which also includes bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Kenny Clarke) swings nicely throughout the three blues and lone ballad ("You Leave Me Breathless"). This is not essential, but it is enjoyable music.

While the centerpiece of this album is the pairing of Milt and Wess, the entire ensemble is like an all star group. One thing I love about this album is how well vibraphones and flutes (and tenor saxophones) go together. Herbie Mann's albums also used that pairing to excellent advantage, but Jackson brings a swinging, bluesy flavor to this album that is compelling.

Listen to the sound samples for a taste of the musical delights that this album contains. And it's only a taste because the full tracks offer so much more than is merely hinted at in the short samples.

There is no comparison between this album and Milt's 'day job' with the Modern Jazz Quartet. Where that group played in a complex, almost restrained style, this ensemble swings and flows. Aside from Milt on vibraphone and Frank Wess on flute and tenor sax, this album features a dream team rhythm section of Hank Jones on piano, Eddie Jones on bass and fellow founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet Kenny Clarke on drums.

This album was recorded for Savoy in NYC on October 28, 1955 and was released the next year. According to a discography I checked the four tracks on this album were the only ones recorded during that session, so do not expect a future reissue with alternate takes or unissued tracks from the same session. For me this stands on its own merits and is one of my favorite Milt Jackson albums.
