Jane Monheit - Albums Collection 2000-2009 (6CD)

Jane Monheit, at 22 years old, has made a stunning debut with the help of some of the finest players in the world: Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, David "Fathead" Newman, Hank Crawford, and Bucky Pizzarelli. From her first entrance on the supremely swinging "Please Be Kind," Monheit makes clear that she's the boss, even in such illustrious company. Her voice is about as close to flawless as a human can get, yet she's never coldly technical or aloof. While she's perfectly comfortable with the medium swing tempos of "More Than You Know," "Save Your Love for Me," and "Twisted," as well as the Latin groove of "My Foolish Heart," it are the ballads that really showcase Monheit's gift. If you don't get goosebumps listening to "Detour Ahead," "Never Let Me Go," and "Dindi," you probably don't have a pulse.

The somewhat nostalgic thrust of Monheit's repertoire and style might prove a liability over time. In this sense, the equally young Claudia Acuña, who has displayed considerable arranging and writing chops, is a step ahead of her. Yet Monheit's budding musical adventurousness is made evident by her subtle vocal overdubs toward the end of "Dindi." Her revelatory approach to classic songs is highlighted by her a cappella performance of the seldom-heard introductory verse to "I've Got It Bad." But on future albums, lest she fall into a retro rut, she'll need to work on realizing her potential as a musical risk taker.

Jane Monheit's sophomore outing follows in the same accessible mold as her debut, Never Never Land. The young, fairly green vocalist is joined again by all-star musicians, including renowned pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Greg Hutchinson, with Michael Brecker and Tom Harrell making a handful of guest appearances each. Closing the album on a surprising note, African phenom Richard Bona joins for an intimate duo rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You," playing acoustic guitar accompaniment and overdubbing fretless bass filigree behind Monheit's vocal. Monheit's exquisite voice is becoming more seasoned and expressive, particularly on sassier numbers like "Hit the Road to Dreamland" and "I'm Through with Love." She also wraps her seductive charm around Jobim's swaying free-association poem "Waters of March" and takes on two of jazz's grand ballads, Billy Strayhorn's "Something to Live For" and Fran Landesman's "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most." The latter, a duet with Kenny Barron, prompts one to compare and contrast Chaka Khan's rendition with Chick Corea on 1982's Echoes of an Era. "Blame It on My Youth," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "Over the Rainbow" are pleasant but less remarkable. (The hidden 12th track, which features Monheit as a child croaking her way a cappella through "Over the Rainbow," is a harmless bit of self-indulgence.) There are a number of textural enhancements that distinguish this album from its predecessor, including subtle overdubbed background vocals, unobtrusive string orchestrations by Bill Fisher, and general arranging input from the superb young pianist David Berkman. With the Joni Mitchell tune and also with "If," a '70s soft rock hit by Bread, Monheit complicates her image as a retro jazz classicist, which earned her some rather severe critical drubbing when she broke onto the scene in 2000.

Her clear, expressive voice is ideally suited for dreamy ballads. She swings. Her range is full and she articulates quite flexibly. Accuracy seems to come naturally. Emotion plays a large part in her performance. And she's only 24.

Jane Monheit interprets lyrics. She also surrounds the room with wordless vocals that paint colorful scenery. Backed by Kenny Barron and an all-star line-up, her latest album seems destined for success. Yet, there's a small problem with the performance. It becomes quite clear on the three tracks she performs with lone accompanist. An ounce of dramatic tension overshadows each number. A show singer will usually employ such melodrama to ensure that the audience gets the message. And ballads require a certain amount of tension, no matter the setting. However, to be convincing, a jazz singer must also balance the performance with a natural, loose spirit. This one runs tightly throughout, and drowns itself in somber thoughts.

What's needed are soulful changes in emotion that would provide something more comfortable. Overdubbing her own voice, Monheit attains perfect harmony with superbly crafted lines. Michael Brecker and Tom Harrell add interesting interludes. Brecker is particularly creative on "I'll Be Seeing You." Surrounded by exciting sidemen and possessing superb musical skills, Monheit would seem to have it made. There's no doubt she's on her way.

Having shown off her precocious jazz skills and love for old standards on her commercially eye-opening first two albums, the beautiful young star Jane Monheit is more relaxed and in her element on her third effort, which plays up her appeal as a pop chanteuse. Though she oversells the Eric Kaz-Libby Titus '70s rock classic "Love Has No Pride," and is too young to penetrate "Haunted Heart" (listen to Jo Stafford's 1947 version for some real chills), she brings a fresh vibrancy to "Just Squeeze Me" and "Cheek to Cheek," and acquits herself nicely with a pair of numbers by Brazilian tunesmith Ivan Lins. Best of all is her affecting, vocally pure rendering of Leonard Bernstein's "Some Other Time" (from the musical On the Town), featuring strings arranged by Alan Broadbent. Her accompanists include bassist Ron Carter, trumpeter Tom Harrell, drummer Kenny Washington, and tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm.

Jane Monheit's third album attempts to combine a number of elements: jazz standards, Brazilian repertoire, ballads lushly orchestrated by Alan Broadbent and Vince Mendoza, and even pop vehicles originally sung by Linda Ronstadt and Judy Collins. The young vocalist is usually at her best fronting a small combo; here one wishes she had relied more on her working band with pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Joe Martin, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm, and drummer/husband Rick Montalbano. It is they who provide this record's most rewarding moments: Martin reharmonizes Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me"; Kanan presents a funky take on "Cheek to Cheek" and duets with Monheit on an unusually slow "Tea for Two." On these tracks one can hear Monheit taking vocal risks, testing her mettle with bluesy inflections and bold peaks in volume. Much of the rest of the album is closer to Streisand than Sarah Vaughan, however. The final four tracks bog down in slow tempos and a vanilla-syrup aesthetic; her Portuguese-language rendition of Ivan Lins' "Comecar de Novo" seems especially contrived. But her duet with guitarist Rene Toledo on "Chega de Saudade" is more convincing, and Lins' guest appearance on his own "Once I Walked in the Sun" provides some lilting harmonic tensions.

Poor Jane Monheit. She violates two major commandments of jazz: thou shalt not become popular and thou shalt not be pretty. This combination — together with her youth — has evidently created suspicion (and maybe “sour grapes”) in the minds of some jazz fans, critics and even a few musicians. After all, jazz performers must have a daytime gig. Right? Popularity and quality cannot coexist. According to such thinking, since Monheit is a hit in the market place, she must therefore be a “pop” singer. Additionally, female jazz singers should look like Sarah, Ella, Anita or Dinah. Each of these ladies was certainly fine looking and each is a marvelous singer, but they are not considered pretty in the traditional sense. Again, to such thinking, prettiness and quality also cannot coexist. Jazz singers are not permitted to be both popular and pretty. Strike two for Ms Monheit.

Well, Monheit is drop-dead gorgeous with full pouty lips and Rapunzelian hair, but she also has a fine jazz pedigree, having attended the prestigious Manhattan School of Music at the age of 17 to study voice (while gigging all over New York City). She entered the 1998 Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition and came in second (to the 63-year old jazz veteran Teri Thornton). On finals night a plethora of agents, jazz writers, record producers, and talent scouts witnessed the new voice and the new lovely girl in town. Jane's career was now right on track.

Monheit is now 25 and In the Sun is her third CD. It follows her two previous highly acclaimed recordings, Never Never Land and Come Dream With Me and is indisputably her best. She has developed a love affair for Brazilian music and performs three on this CD, including the song from which the CD title is derived, “Once I Walked In The Sun,” penned by Ivan Lins, who duets with Jane in parallel harmonies. This is an exceptionally lovely vocal track and one of many highlights of her new CD. In addition to the Brazilian composers, she also covers Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein and Irving Berlin and a seven-minute achingly beautiful version of Rodgers & Hart’s “It Never Entered My Mind.” Monheit even performs the old ‘70s rock classic “Love Has No Pride,” written by Eric Kaz and Libby Titus and popularized by Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Monheit is seemingly an uncomplicated and joyful young woman and her optimism and her youthful delight do not enable her to mine the Schwartz-Deitz classic “Haunted Heart” for deep emotion or to transfigure hurt and confusion. Let’s just say that she does not sound “haunted.” But this is minor quibbling and she brings a vibrancy and glee to "Just Squeeze Me" and "Cheek to Cheek," Best of all, perhaps, is her affecting, vocally pure rendering of the Bernstein-Comden-Green "Some Other Time" (written for the musical On the Town ), featuring strings arranged by Alan Broadbent.

Jane Monheit is not just beautiful; she is a magnificent and elegant singer. She has a crystal clear voice and an unerring sense of pitch and that voice invites the listener into an emotional and warm world. Monheit once said, “for the most part, I’m coming from joy.” There is nothing wrong with that. This old world can use more joy.

Her stellar accompanists include pianist Kenny Ascher, bassist Ron Carter, trumpeter Tom Harrell, drummer Kenny Washington, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm and orchestrations by Alan Broadbent and Vince Mendoza.

Highly recommended.

While the early 2000s bore witness to a bevy of youthful standards singers with earnestly traditional vocals, New Yorker Jane Monheit preceded Norah Jones, Michael Buble, Katie Melua et al. She wowed the jazz world when she was barely out of her teens with her 2000 debut, NEVER NEVER LAND, and quickly ascended to stardom. Monheit's fourth record, 2004's TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE, expresses her love for movie musicals of the 1930s and '40s.

From both Monheit's song choices and the fervor she pours into these selections, it's virtually impossible to challenge the sincerity of her affection. Monheit opens by finding a truly original, offbeat angle to the oft-visited Fats Waller classic "Honeysuckle Rose" and continues to connect throughout the 11 subsequent tracks. She teams up with the aforementioned Michael Buble on a charged version of the always-lively "I Won't Dance" and finds every ounce of sultriness in "Why Can't You Behave?" and "Dancing in the Dark." As with most of the acclaimed jazz stylists of her day, Monheit possesses incredible vocal shrewdness, but it is her almost spiritual connection to the tunes of a bygone era that clearly sets her apart.

Who will be the 21st-century flag-bearer for the Great American Songbook? As late as a year ago, I would have handed the mantle to Diana Krall or Dianne Reeves. Now, with the release of Taking a Chance on Love (Sony Classical), it’s time to acknowledge jazz-cabaret hybrid Jane Monheit’s rightful place at the head of the traditionalist pack.

That’s not to suggest anything inferior about Monheit’s three previous collections of standards or last year’s sublime Live at the Rainbow Room, all released on N-Coded. If you liken Monheit to a finely trained athlete (which, vocally, she is), the N-Coded discs were vigorous workouts done in preparation for the gold medal victory that is Taking a Chance on Love. Simultaneously echoing the purity of Jane Oliver, the dexterity of Keely Smith, the jazz smarts of Chris Connor and the cabaret pizzazz of Julie Wilson, Monheit takes a headlong dive into vintage Hollywood, showcasing that buttercream voice of hers in various settings as she caresses a dozen classics from MGM musicals of the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. Monheit demonstrates equal ease working with her touring quartet (pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Orlando Le Fleming, guitarist Miles Okazaki and drummer Rick Montalbano, who doubles as Monheit’s husband), a guest trio comprised of Geoffrey Keezer (piano) plus former recording mates Christian McBride (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums) and variously configured orchestras, and has reached a level of vocal self-confidence and maturity that intimate duets with Kanan and guitarist Romero Lubambo prove stunningly assured.

Blessed with Wilson’s storytelling flair, she displays tremendous agility in her handling of everything from the trembling fragility of “Embraceable You” and tender contentment of “Bill” to the playful poutiness of Porter’s “Why Can’t You Behave” and slow-thawing distingue of “Love Me or Leave Me.” Paired with Michael Buble for a peppery “I Won’t Dance,” Monheit cleans the floor with the comparatively plodding crooner. (Next time, Jane, hold out for Kurt Elling or Harry Connick or Jamie Cullum-someone more worthy of your impeccable skills). There’s also a bonus track, “Over the Rainbow” which, far superior to the version that opened Monheit’s Come Dream With Me from 2001, is heard over the closing credits of the Jude Law-Gwyneth Paltrow sci-fi adventure Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It’s hard to imagine anyone eclipsing the Judy Garland original, recently selected by the American Film Institute as the greatest musical performance in Hollywood history, but Monheit manages to come dangerously close.

At once crisply assertive and lovingly sensual, vocalist Jane Monheit is the jazz equivalent of the young and charming grade school teacher you secretly nurtured a crush on. A sophisticated bombshell of a performer with a voice that is, like her appearance, voluptuous and flawlessly pretty, Monheit has garnered well-earned comparisons to such icons as Ella Fitzgerald and the goddess of vocal pop, Barbra Streisand. In that sense, her sixth studio album, Surrender, is, at first glance, not dissimilar from her past work. Recorded with her working combo including husband and drummer Rick Montalbano, Surrender is a ballads-heavy album that features a mix of jazz standards, reworked pop tunes, and several bossa nova numbers. What is different is the focus and presentation of Monheit. Rather than featuring her here simply as a singer fronting a jazz band, Surrender is a cinematic showcase, a Broadway-sized coming-out party that finds Monheit's voice framed against sweeping orchestration and glossy, Technicolor arrangements. This is Monheit the vocal diva, the superstar.

Merely possessing a good singing voice is overrated. Whitney Houston has a great voice but too often squanders it on material beneath her talents. Knowing what kind of music best suits your voice is an underrated quality and one Jane Monheit possesses in abundance.

Monheit is blessed with a dynamic instrument that possesses ample reserves of range, depth and style to spare. Surrender is her bid to move to the head of the class of contemporary vocalists. Monheit's voice and the sophisticated stylings of her band of ace musicians never pander, never insult the listener's intelligence, and deliver with this album one of the most thoroughly satisfying releases of 2007.

There's a cool confidence in Monheit as she delivers the goods on "If You Went Away." The flirtatious slinkiness of the title track, written by Peter Eldridge (her tutor at the Manhattan School of Music), is playful and sensual, never descending into the cartoon parody of seduction running rampant in pop music today.

Monheit's love affair with Latin music continues as she duets with vocalist Ivan Lins on "Rio De Malo." "Caminhos Cruzados" features harmonicist Toots Thielemans, while Sergio Mendes contributes piano on a drop-dead gorgeous rendition of his own "So Many Stars." A Monheit album wouldn't be complete without an Antonio Carlos Jobim tune, and here it's "Só Tinha de Ser Com Você," lovingly rendered with all the necessary sass.

It requires a certain amount of confidence to deliver the "huckleberry friend" lyric of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River," but confidence is a quality Monheit isn't short of. The unexpected but welcome treat of Surrender is Stevie Wonder's underrated gem, "Overjoyed," spiced up by Monheit's interplay with saxophonist Ari Ambrose.

There is a natural urge to gush over something as lush and smart as Surrender. In an age where what passes for good singing is barely a step up from what you might find in a Saturday night karaoke bar, Monheit is the real deal; a trained professional who has paid her dues and has now arrived as a fully accomplished artist.

It's hard not to pull for someone who respects music as diverse as Henry Mancini to Stevie Wonder, possesses one of the finest voices making music today, and doesn't dumb down her song selection to chase trends or pander for the attention of an audience that hasn't caught up with her yet.

This is the album Monheit has been building up to since her debut on the music scene in 2001. Beautiful women often have difficulty in being taken seriously, but the shimmering glow of her voice was never in doubt. What she would do with it was. The time has come to remove the qualifier of "promising new vocalist" from describing Monheit. Surrender is ample evidence that any discussion of premier singers delivering quality work in jazz and ballads has to include Monheit right along with Norah Jones and Diana Krall.

The beautifully subtle pop/jazz vocalist has been one of the great old souls of music since launching her recording career after winning the first runner up prize at the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute Vocal Competition. But she celebrated the significant chronological milestone of passing 30 while making this graceful and exquisite album. Beyond that, Monheit also celebrates her new motherhood to son Jack, and that's what inspired the inclusion of the always welcome "Rainbow Connection"; she sings the charming song – and its lyrics that inspired the name of the recording – to Jack all the time. At home, however, it doesn't have the exquisite Gil Goldstein accordion touch that makes this one of the best renditions ever. Goldstein arranged many of the tracks, but one of the most exciting jazzy turns, Monheit's swinging, swaggering "Get Out of Town," was done by pianist Michael Kanan, who was part of the ensemble that recorded half of these tracks while the singer was still pregnant. In many ways, then, this 13-track collection is a chronicle of the singer pre- and post-motherhood – and all something that Jack will be proud of as he grows older. As always, the key to a great interpreter's project is the choice of material, and Monheit makes interesting picks, ranging from a wistful take on Paul Simon's "I Do It for Your Love" to Fiona Apple's dark and haunting "Slow Like Honey" and Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star." She also mines her traditional comfort zone with songs by Cole Porter, Jimmy Dorsey, and Leonard Bernstein, but taps into even richer emotions with Ivan Lins' "Acaso" and the bubbling samba "A Primeira Vez." Another triumphant set, no matter what side of 30 or motherhood Monheit is on.

Working down the Jane Monheit checklist, does The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me deliver everything we’ve come to count on from the jazz-cabaret chanteuse? Creamy covers of classic ballads? Yep, including rich, smooth, molasses-slow renditions of “I’m Glad There Is You” and “Lucky to Be Me.” Silk-lined treatments of more contemporary material? Check, courtesy of languorous re-workings of Corrine Bailey Rae’s “Like a Star,” Fiona Apple’s “Slow Like Honey” and Paul Simon’s achingly bittersweet “I Do It for Your Love.” A dash of Brazil, expertly served up in Portuguese? Indeed, with a shimmering saunter through “A Primeira Vez” accompanied solely by Romero Lubambo’s guitar.

But there’s more to Monheit’s latest than simply the expected. There’s a heightened maturity, a sense that she’s entering a distinctly more confident and self-satisfied phase. For proof, it’s easy to point to Monheit’s fine handling of “Something Cool” and “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men.” But both tunes are so thematically ripe that any first-rate singer could capture their narrative pathos. The real revelation here is her handling of Ivan Lins’ “No Tomorrow.” Monheit navigates the lyric’s emotional tug-of-war with a sagacity and sophistication worthy of Peggy Lee at her best. More than merely exquisite, the track elevates her from very good to great.
