When do you ever have time to take an in-depth look at a niche genre like the clarinet trio? The first Corona Lockdown was such an opportunity for clarinetist Daniel Ottensamer, cellist Stephan Koncz and pianist Christoph Traxler. Unlike many artists in those days, the three were not interested in a musical quick fix. Rather, they wanted to use the downtime to dive deep into the repertoire of their constellation, wanted to eavesdrop on what influence the master trios of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms had on other composers, across all times and across all continents. "We started with the two great trios," Ottensamer explains, "but the journey took us further and further, to more and more exciting places." In fact, the anthology explores entirely new territories, traveling to turn-of-the-century France, gathering influences from jazz and new music, settling in Vienna, where the trio even makes a fragment by Arnold Schoenberg sound, and combining great masterpieces with new sounds. "At first there was the idea of confronting the standard works with new music, but the work on our project became more and more sprawling, and we found more and more works in our constellation in which the sound diversity of the clarinet and the interplay of the three instruments were explored in completely different ways," explains Stephan Koncz. Ottensamer and Koncz already played together in the sandbox. One of their parents came to Vienna from Hungary in the 1970s to make music. Christoph Traxler joined them during their studies. "We've been making music together for 15 years," he says, "and especially with a project like this, which has expanded to more than a year because of the pandemic, which requires so much searching and working together, it was important to know and trust each other well, to go on a journey of discovery together, and to keep finding new approaches in the rehearsals." In this way, the three have discovered very different facets of the clarinet trio and a wide compositional range. "I assume that this instrumentation is so popular with composers because these three instruments open up an incredible number of musical possibilities and sound spectrums," says Koncz. The tonal range of the clarinet, cello and piano is very wide compared to other musical instruments; in addition, the clarinet is able to master furiously fast sequences of notes. It is also the instrument that, after the classical and romantic periods, stands for new styles such as jazz (here especially in Daniel Schnyder's composition) or klezmer music. In some of the pieces presented here, the piano serves not only as a harmony instrument, but also as a percussion and rhythm instrument. Especially in modern compositions, such as those by Jörg Widmann and Wolfgang Rihm, all three instruments are pushed to their limits, to the point where the pianist has to pluck the strings with a plectrum and search for overtones. Gradually, the musical project grew from an idea into a comprehensive anthology. The three decided to consider only original compositions for their constellation and not arrangements (of which there are quite a few). They begin with Beethoven's Op. 11, and the finale is Magnus Lindberg's Clarinet Trio, in which the instruments are explored for all their sonic and instrumental possibilities. In between lies a long, exciting musical journey that - as the three musicians have discovered - makes repeated stops in the musical tradition of their native Vienna. "It's amazing how often composers borrow from Viennese dances, for example, by processing ländler and referring to that Viennese school in which the two founding fathers of the clarinet trio, Beethoven and Brahms, were also at home," says Christoph Traxler.
