Alice Sara Ott's new recital combines Edvard Grieg's Opus 16 with a dozen of the more famous of his "Lyrical Pieces". His at first glance somewhat strange title "Wonderland", of course, alludes to Lewis Carroll's famous children's book "Alice in Wonderland", which appeared in 1865, the same decade in which Grieg wrote the first of his "album sheets" and his unabated popular piano concerto. With the opening cadence of her Munich concert recording, the now 28-year-old German-Japanese makes it clear that this showpiece of concerting pianists is not primarily about the virtuoso show. She takes every note of Grieg seriously and articulates it with emphatic conscientiousness. Their interpretation, carried sonorously and attentively by the orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen, seems convincingly thought-out from A to Z, but more static and less powerful than the recording with Javier Perianes, but on the other hand more energetic than one hears from the sensitive Herbert Schuch – to name only two of the younger Grieg competitors. The precious miniatures of Grieg are also in good hands with the former Kämmerling pupil. Of course, no one will expect her short pieces to be interpreted, as Gilels once did, as a wistful look back at a "sunny past." Ott's point of view is quite clear, she strives to decisively work out the characteristics of each individual title from the "Butterfly" to the "Train of the Dwarves" to the famous "Wedding Day on Troldhaugen". But it is precisely in this final piece of her recital that she deviates once from her otherwise so natural way of designing: She pulls the tempo so extremely in several places that it sounds as if the festive, outdoor celebrating company were drifting apart in order to get safe from a sudden downpour.
