Albert Camus as Philosopher and Political Thinker: The Radicality of Modesty

Albert Camus as Philosopher and Political Thinker: The Radicality of Modesty by Tommaso Visone
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 150 Pages | ISBN : 3031745639 | 3.2 MB

This book explores the role of modesty in the thought of Albert Camus.
Camusian modesty – modestie – affirms, against nihilism and absolutism, the necessity of taking care and putting passion into the relativity of human creation and recreation. The book shows how this care and passion spring from the necessity of a continually renewed tension between the self and the limits which transcend the self. From this standpoint, modesty is not a form of moderation; it goes to the root of human condition in face of the absurd. It is a radical attitude which engages human life in a daily struggle for meaning.

Husserl and Leibniz: Metaphysics, Monadology and Phenomenology by Iulian Apostolescu, Mohammad Shafiei
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 270 Pages | ISBN : 3031788796 | 3.4 MB

This text explores how phenomenology might lead to monadological metaphysics, and conversely, how monadology might be helpful to nonmetaphysical thinking. Little has been published (especially in English) on the connections between these two fields and this edited volume is an invitation to assess the similarities and differences between Husserl’s philosophical projects and Leibniz’s metaphysics. Many Leibniz scholars have contributed to this volume. Phenomenologists covered include Stumpf, Brentano, Heidegger, Reinach, and Gurwitsch. This book appeals to scholars and advanced students working in the field.

Brief History of Standards by Hao Zhang , Youwei Meng , Zhaoyang Zeng , Lanlan Zhao
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 307 Pages | ISBN : 9819797268 | 25.5 MB

This book takes the technological revolution and industrial changes as the background. The timeline uses the timeline to explain the path of changes in standard concepts since the millennium, showing the scientific system and gradually becoming the focus of the people. This book refers to the classics of a number of standard theories, introduces a number of standards and its theoretical content, and combines the industrial observation experience and typical cases accumulated by the author to put forward opinions on standards and standardization. As the awareness of standards gradually rooted in people's hearts, this book is not only an undergraduate reading, which meets the attention of readers, but also has some appeals to the academic, industry, and business circles to provide reference for the development of world standards.

Ibero-Dutch Imperial Entanglements in the Seventeenth Century: Geopolitical Shifts in Global Perspective by Silvia Z. Mitchell, Erica Heinsen-Roach
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 413 Pages | ISBN : 3031615220 | 55.9 MB

This book explores the entanglements among Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century from a global perspective. It offers a compelling analysis of how Ibero-Dutch relations shifted from violence and conflict—during the Iberian Union (1580–1640) and the Dutch quest for independence (1579–1648)—into collaboration and coexistence in the century’s second half. The encounters between the Iberians and the Dutch in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean regions highlight their centrality in geopolitical shifts around the globe. Challenging the paradigm of decline, the contributions gathered here demonstrate that instead, each polity embraced strategic trade-offs and reshaped imperial pursuits that ultimately allowed them to thrive as empires during the entire seventeenth century.

Arching in Piled Embankments Including the Effects of Reinforcement and Subsoil

Arching in Piled Embankments Including the Effects of Reinforcement and Subsoil by Yan Zhuang
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 139 Pages | ISBN : 9819611970 | 24.3 MB

This book examined the performance of the reinforced piled embankments in both plane strain and three-dimensional conditions. The arching mechanisms involved in the piled embankments have been investigated by conducting a series of finite element analyses. A better understanding of the variation for the performance of the piled embankments along with the change of the embankment geometry and piles arrangement has been achieved. This book also considered predictions of reinforcement tension in a piled embankment from British standard BS 8006 published in 2010 and the 2012 amended version, and compared the results with finite-element model predictions. Good predictions of maximum reinforcement sag are achieved by slight modification of the BS 8006 method. Furthermore, the book considered the potentially beneficial contribution of a lightly overconsolidated clay subsoil layer, both in the finite-element predictions and as a simple modification to the BS 8006 predictive method. When compared to the finite-element results the proposed modified BS 8006 prediction is quite accurate. Finally, the concept of an interaction diagram and corresponding equation for use in design is proposed, which considered the effect of soil arching, the contribution of reinforcement and the subsoil. The calculation of the vertical stress carried by the subsoil due to arching effect and reinforcement for multilayered soil was proposed. The results show that subsoil gives a major contribution to overall vertical equilibrium, while the reinforcement gives obvious contribution at relatively large settlement. Good design practice is necessary to prevent excessive settlement of piled embankments. This book can enhance the understanding of the load transfer mechanism in piled embankments. The research results will provide a scientific basis and technical support for the settlement control of embankments for the design life of the infrastructure in soft soil areas.

Service Innovation and Management: Digitalization, Service Infusion and Customer Experience by Lars Witell
english | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 191 Pages | ISBN : 3031765591 | 7.6 MB

This book investigates how digitalization and service infusion are changing service provision and the customer experience. It highlights the central role of service management and service innovation in making these changes not only appear in theory but also implementing them in business practice. At the beginning of the 21st century, many manufacturing firms struggled to exploit the financial potential of service businesses, a phenomenon described as the service paradox. While many manufacturing firms are still struggling with this paradox, several firms (both service and manufacturing firms) are simultaneously struggling with digitalization. This phenomenon can be viewed as the digitalization paradox, i.e., as a situation in which companies invest in digitalization but struggle to reach the expected revenue growth. By applying the lens of service innovation to digitalization and service infusion, the book showcases how firms can overcome the service and digitalization paradoxes, transform service provision, and improve the customer experience. It offers comprehensive coverage, blending literature reviews, conceptualizations, empirical illustrations, and case studies to offer a multifaceted perspective on corporate strategies, illuminating pathways to address the challenges posed by the service and digitalization paradoxes.

Research shows that when accessing and retaining work, and when seeking promotion, disabled people often face discrimination and disadvantage that can be unlawful. Obtaining a remedy is no easy matter as, although access to justice and a fair public hearing are key human rights, disabled claimants often face barriers in Employment Tribunals.
