    Il volume raccoglie gli scritti di Adolphe Appia da "La musica e la messa in scena" (1895) a "La messa in scena del dramma wagneriano" (1899), fino a ciò che, dell'attività teorica e artistica di Appia, costituisce il punto di "L'opera d'arte vivente" (Ginevra, 1921). Secondo quanto rileva Ferruccio Marotti nella prefazione al volume, in cui ricostruisce anche l'insieme dell'attività teatrale dell'artista ginevrino, quel che di più 'moderno' l'opera di Appia ci offre è contenuto nel rigore della sua teoria, o meglio nella teoria del suo rigore. Scritti che sono alla base istituzionale della storia della regia. All'interno di tale sistema, tutti gli elementi dello spettacolo assumono valori nuovi e insospettati. Il teatro viene non di una riforma si tratta, ma di una negazione totale che lascia il posto a una utopia altrettanto radicale.
