In 1999, Collectors' Choice released Voices in Latin/The Freshman Year, which contained two complete albums – Voices in Latin (1958, originally released on Capitol) and The Freshman Year (1961, originally released on Capitol) – by the Four Freshmen on one compact disc.Jason Birchmeier, Allmusic.com
The original members of The Four Freshmen sang and harmonized with a lot of style; they stood out just as the current members do! This group has enjoyed a great deal of success. This CD has all of the songs from 2 of their 1958, original member record albums entitled Voices In Latin and The Freshman Year. These tracks sound just great; there's no surface noise and it's a big improvement over my old record albums which have been worn down to the point where they no longer have grooves on them! The artwork is very nicely done and it incorporates the original artwork from the two record album jackets when these albums were released in 1958.
The CD begins with The Four Freshmen singing their hearts out on "Frenesi;" they never sounded better–and how's about that brass? "If I Should Lose You" sparkles brightly when The Four Freshmen sing it to perfection; and their excellent diction enhances the performance even more! "Yesterdays" uses the drums well in the arrangement; this adds a Latin touch to the tune and these men handle complex tempo and key changes like the pros they truly were and still remain! In particular, I really like "Tangerine;" the big band arrangement of "Tangerine" works wonders for this ballad.
"What's New?" is very pretty; and The Four Freshmen never miss a beat, either. "Brazil" is a stand-out of this album; "Brazil" was always one of my favorite Latin numbers and The Four Freshmen do not disappoint! They speed up the tempo just a bit to make "Brazil" an electric number; and I think you'll like "Brazil" very much. In addition, "Star Eyes" is very easy on the ear; this proves these guys truly had the chops to handle sophisticated ballads. Again, the music makes good use of the brass and that's terrific. I also like "Again;" "Again" features these men front and center for a classic love song. They ace this seemingly effortlessly and that Latin beat makes the number heavenly.
"Fools Rush In" charms me with its beauty; it's a major highlight of this CD. They harmonize to perfection, too. Moreover, "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" is most romantic; The Four Freshmen deliver this without letting go of a superfluous note and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" certainly gets the royal treatment here! "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring" has both major and minor keys to make it a rather touching ballad; these men never falter and it's a beautiful number on this CD. "My Funny Valentine" is another one of my very favorite love songs; The Four Freshmen do this one up right–wow! They do great justice to this ballad with a very sensitive rendition that glows brighter than silver and gold combined. "It's Only A Paper Moon" is actually a bit too jazzy for my taste; but this CD is just so good I can overlook this disappointment. The CD ends strong with The Four Freshmen singing "Dream." "Dream" sounds heavenly and it's so clear that these men put everything they have into their delivery of this classic song; and they do not disappoint.
The Four Freshmen rate high in my book with twofer CDs like this one. Yes, the group has undergone several membership changes since they first achieved fame and fortune in the early 1950s; but their sound remains essentially the same thanks to careful, proactive planning–not to mention their enchanting interpretations of the classics that create the same winning shows year after year after year.Review by Matthew G.
